"Mormon Studies Review" has been suspended, Danny Peterson is gone

steve benson June 2012

So acknowledges the Maxwell Institute in a news release dated 22 June 2012:

"The Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship is continually striving to align its work with the academy's highest objectives and standards, as befits an organized research unit at Brigham Young University. . . .

"To better serve these goals, last year we renamed our venerable FARMS Review to Mormon Studies Review. For many years the FARMS Review has filled an important niche in the intellectual life of its many readers under the vigorous editorship of Professor Daniel C. Peterson and his associates .

. . . We thank these colleagues and the many contributing writers to the Review for their industry and scholarship over the past twenty-three years.

". . . [T]o better position the new Mormon Studies Review within its academic discipline, we are now assembling a board of scholars in this field to advise us and will appoint a new editorial team. We regret that we must suspend publication during this period of reorganization and reorientation, but we are certain that our current—and many new—readers will find the new Mormon Studies Review a valuable scholarly resource for the discipline.

"We will be in contact with our subscribers shortly with information about a subscription refund. We have not yet set a launch date for the new Review . . . . "

Mormon apologists eating their own. It's almost as bad as those blood-thirsty Book of Mormon scenes of the last days of the Nephites. :)

Yupp!

I sincerely wish them well.
I hope they can start being honest about the Mormon church's history in a way that will be acceptable to non-Mormon scholars, like the article reports. The old guard rat pack has been very adversarial and unhelpful to anyone.

It's not possible.

They're finally purging The Brownshirts. It was bound to happen eventually.

I'm a little confused. I thought scholars were enemies of the church. Isn't that what BKP said?
So now they're assembling a board of scholars to tell all the members what they really believe?
Next thing you know they'll be hiring feminists, or gay people to defend them.

Maybe they'll just replace it wholesale with John Dehlin's "Mormon Stories." :p

LOL! My personal opinion is that in these tough economic times,
the Maxwell Institute simply could not afford the daily delivery of 1,000 Krispy Kreme jelly-filled donuts anymore.

"Bradford wants to [focus] on more secular-style studies that will be accessible and acceptable to non-Mormon scholars"
Are there really any scholars outside of Mormonism who give a @#$%& about Mormon "history?"

So, Jan Shipps is going to be their sole contributor now?

Now, THAT'S funny! :)

"we are now assembling a board of scholars"

I'm sure they'll have experts in reformed Egyptian, resurrected spirits, spiritual eyes, peep stones, and other related fields. Can't wait.

Feel a little compassion -- after all where do you go in the real world with THAT on your resume? Cushy job while it lasted I guess.

I have a hunch the new publication is as likely to be successful as . . .
the Swedish war ship Vasa, which sank on her maiden voyage after travelling less than a mile (1628). For details: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasa_(ship)

As for DCP, I think he was viewed for his embarrassment potential. The church doesn’t want any quotable loudmouths during this election cycle.

The church has never really liked vocal people who start getting their own opinions about anything. The church's modus operandi is to stay vague and distant.

Thanks, all. I was trimming some foliage for a next-door neighbor and the extension ladder slipped away from the shared wall between us . . .
I dropped several feet to the concrete driveway, my legs went through the rungs, I fell backwards and impacted my left side pretty heavily.

My left arm got a real good sprain from the wrist up to my shoulder and still is a bit tender.

That's where I was putting my primary focus and didn't pay much attention (at least at first) to my left leg which I thought was superficially bruised. A few weeks later, that "bruise" had morphed into a serious staph infection of cellulitis that encompassed the entire calf.

My doctor told me to go to the ER, where they performed surgery to drain a large abcess, then admitted me. The following morning, I had more surgery done to remove dead and infected tissue, was put on IV anti-biotics and remained in the hospital for six days.

An in-home nurse comes by every other day to check the wound (it was pretty large and deep) and to change out the dressing. There's a special vacuum device, powered by a small portable shoulder-strapped battery pack, attached to the inside of the wound that helps keep the it drained and that assists in the growth of new tissue. I'm still on anti-biotics (oral) and the assessement is that, as the nurses say, it's a "nice wound" which is healing well. Might ultimately need a skin graft, though. Will have to wait and see.

In the meantime, I am able to walk around and do stuff. Just have to be careful.

Moral of the story:

Don't be a ladder-day saint. It can be hazardous to your health.

You draw with your leg?
Seriously, get better soon.

My mother had a similar infection a couple of years ago after falling and injuring her leg. It appeared relatively minor but became serious quickly. There was worry about her keeping her leg from the knee down, but she got excellent wound treatment, as you are getting, and it healed eventually. Nothing to fool around with. Glad you got help when you did.
steve benson
It's hard to do that and get a leg up at the same time.
