I used tithing to pay off the house
evergreen June 2013
Instead of paying tithing the last 5 years, I saved the money and paid off the house this week. Woohoo!!!!!!!!
I would say that was a good use of tithing money.

Congratulations. What freedom. Free from the Church and the Bank.

Re: I used tithing to pay off the house
I used tithing to send my son to South America for a couple of weeks this summer with his Spanish club. The monthly payment for the trip was almost exactly what we used to pay monthly in tithing. Definitely better than paying for a mall out in Salt Lake City.
Although my husband would rather have the house paid off like you did.

My DH used his tithing money to pay off his car!
I want to hear what everyone else has used their "tithing" money for.

Donate to charities that actually do good to the poor/marginalized. We also travel and save more!
Love using it to get out of debt (we don't have any), you are free to help others!

I guarantee that money went to a better place than the church would have spent it, with most of it going to a shopping mall and missionary suits.

It's nice to think about how many of us are now finding better uses for our money. Another discussion (probably for a separate thread) is how we are better using our time.

I use my tithing to feed my 401k
When I quit going to church, I started putting 10% of my gross pay in my 401k. My employer adds another 5%. I now have a decent start toward retirement.
I don't know how I could have paid tithing and fed my retirement account when I first started working. Only one of those will take care of me in old age, and it isn't LDS, Inc.

Congrats on paying of your house! Since we have stopped paying tithing we have puts some money extra towards the principle of our house, we have put our kids in swimming lessons and gymnastics, and have gone out on dates.
